Nicandros Bouras is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London and he is currently Programme Director of Maudsley International. He also currently leads the research of the Daedalus Trust. Nicandros Bouras was born in Patras Greece where he completed his school years and he graduated from Athens Medical School. He then trained in Neurology and Psychiatry in Athens, at the Eginition University Hospital. In 1974 he moved to England and worked in St. John’s Hospital in Stone Aylesbury, Warnford Hospital Oxford and Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. He joined the Academic Department of Psychiatry at Guy’s Hospital Medical School in October 1975. Professor Bouras led the research programme of the first Community Mental Health Centre in the UK in 1979 and carried out extensive studies of service monitoring evaluation. He was Consultant Psychiatrist, at South London and Maudsley Foundation NHS Trust from 1982 to 2008 based at Guy’s Hospital London. He was instrumental in the re-provision of services from large institutions, including the development of community based multi-professional mental health services that have been supporting numerous residential facilities in local communities for people with chronic and complex mental health needs, forensic problems and neurodevelopmental disorders. He initiated the development of the Estia, (Evaluation, Services, Training, Intervention, Assessment) Centre in 1999, remaining its director until 2008. He has been an executive member of several National and International organisations and editor and member of the editorial board of several journals. His research has been focused on health service related topics including assessment and clinical effectiveness of specialist mental health services, evaluation of multi-professional training methods, social and biological determinants of behaviour in psychiatric patients. He has published extensively in community psychiatry and mental health aspects of people with intellectual disabilities. Several of his books have been translated into various languages. He is a Fellow of The Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Royal Society of Medicine. In addition Nicandros Bouras has been an active participant in the activities of several Greek Societies in London and was a Founder Member and first President of the World Hellenic Biomedical Association. Currently he leads the research of the Daedalus Trust that examines the personality changes observed in leaders in all walks of life such as politicians, chief executives officers of large companies, banks and other organisations as well as in military and judicial systems.
